What is Ectiva?

Ectiva is a trade name of Sibutramine hydrochloride (another trade names are: Meridia, Obestat, Raductil, Reduxade, Reductil, Leptos).

Ectiva is an appetite suppressant that is used as a weight control medication.

Doctors rarely prescribe this drug unless you suffer from extreme obesity or weight related health problems. Your Body Mass Index is required to be 30 or more. The exception is that you can have a Body Mass Index of 27 or more if you also suffer from a serious weight-related health problem.

Ectiva works by making you feel satisfied with less food.

For the healthiest and most effective weight loss you should have a long term plan.

Before taking Ectiva you should review your diet so that you understand your eating patterns fully and thus you will be able to balance you newly reduced appetite.

In tests typical weight loss varied between 3llbs and 14llbs during a period of up to six months. Weight loss should be a gradual process, and not a quick fix.

This medication is approved for longer periods of use (up to 12 months at a time) and promotes gradual weight loss over longer periods of time.

How and when should I take Ectiva?

The starting dose for Ectiva is 10 mg. We recommend that all patients start on this dosage although we will approve you for 15 mg dosage as well if this is appropriate in your circumstances.

Take this medicine in the morning. This medicine may be taken on an empty stomach or with food.

Ectiva is a strong medication so it is better to start on the lower dose to ensure that you tolerate the drug well and you are not experiencing any side effects.

Remember, in order to work properly Ectiva should be taken with a low calorie diet.

Ectiva Side Effects

Side effects that may occur while taking this medicine include headache, back pain, constipation, increased appetite, nausea, dry mouth, trouble sleeping, or dizziness. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor.

Check with your doctor as soon as possible if you experience rash, hives, seizures, worsening of vision or vision changes, decreased amount of urine, or unusual bruising or bleeding.

Ectiva Precautions

Do not use Ectiva with anti-depressants such as monoamine oxidase inhibitors, tricyclic anti-depressants and Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors.

Do not use Ectiva if you have a liver or kidney disorder, glaucoma, hyperthyroidism or and history of seizures, heart conditions or strokes.

Ectiva cannot be taken by women who are pregnant or breast-feeding as it would be harmful to the baby.

Ectiva Storage

Store this medicine at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) in a tightly-closed container, away from heat, moisture, and light.
